Abstract

The scriptwriter plays an important role in the creation of documentary films by being responsible for structuring the storytelling and translating research findings into meaningful audiovisual experiences. This role is applied in the documentary film Kabaret: Seni yang Dibiarkan Mati, which addresses the declining existence of Bandung Kabaret as a performing art facing challenges in terms of sustainability. This article aims to explain the application of the Poetic Mode in the scriptwriting process of the documentary film Kabaret: Seni yang Dibiarkan Mati, particularly in script structure and narrative development. The scriptwriting process involved idea development, literature review, observation, archival research, interviews with sources, story structuring using the three-act structure, and narrative development based on the characteristics of the Poetic Mode. The discussion results indicate that the application of the Poetic Mode in the script structure is capable of constructing a narrative progression from a sense of loss toward hope through Sequence Orientation, Sequence Development, and Sequence Resolution. Furthermore, the application of the Poetic Mode in narrative development is manifested through the use of reflective diction, repetition, contrasts in meaning, and the integration of narration, interviews, archival materials, and visuals to create an emotional experience while providing space for audience interpretation. Therefore, scriptwriting functions not only as a production guideline but also as a creative strategy for representing reality through a reflective audiovisual experience in the documentary film Kabaret: Seni yang Dibiarkan Mati.
