Sosialisasi Pembaruan Hukum Pidana Nasional melalui Undang-Undang Nomor 1 Tahun 2023 tentang Kitab Undang-Undang Hukum Pidana kepada Masyarakat Desa Umalulu, Kecamatan Umalulu, Sumba Timur

Abstract

The enactment of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code (National Criminal Code) marks the end of the validity of the *Wetboek van Strafrecht* (WvS) a colonial legacy that had been in force in Indonesia for over a century. With a three-year transition period following its promulgation, the National Criminal Code is set to take effect on January 2, 2026. The fundamental changes introduced by the National Criminal Code regarding legal principles, sentencing systems, and the formulation of criminal offenses require adequate public understanding to ensure effective law enforcement and prevent disparities in legal comprehension. This community service activity aims to disseminate information regarding the substance of the National Criminal Code reform to the residents of Kupang City. The activity employs a legal education method combined with a socio-legal approach, carried out through stages comprising preparation, lectures and material presentations, interactive discussions, and an evaluation of participant understanding. The material covered includes the background and urgency of the reform, new principles within the Code, the sentencing system (double-track system), new and reformulated criminal offenses, and the transition period for implementation. This activity is expected to enhance public understanding and preparedness for the enforcement of the National Criminal Code.
